A short history of me

  • 2003: Dipped a toe into computer science II at the university. Dropped out real quick. Switched to communications design – a much better fit.
  • 2003: Started freelancing as an illustrator. That never really stopped.
  • 2009: Graduated Dipl. Kommunikationsdesigner from HBK Saar. I illustrated Joanna Newsom’s song “Monkey & Bear” as propaganda posters.
  • 2011 – 2021: I explored leadership roles on the visual side of the games industry: concept artist, art director, team lead, creative advisor, talent scout, design director.
  • 2010s – 2020s: Taught design and concept art in various schools. I like sharing stuff and had the opportunity to do so there.
  • 2025 april – august: Selling strawberries, ’cause before starting university was the best time to try something completely different.
  • 2025: Let’s try the magic reset button in real life: started a dual study program in career guidance (Beratung für Bildung, Beschäftigung und Beruf – HdbA Schwerin, Agentur für Arbeit Berlin Süd
  • 2025 december: I quit the dual study program.
  • 2026: I guess it’s back to freelance

Currently

I’m always going through books, albums, and other things – here’s what stuck lately:

  • The Grannies – Docu

Here’s a ~17-minute-long documentary of a group of players exploring Read Dead Redemption 2 – outside the intended levels/areas. RDR2 is a visually beautiful game and it’s interesting to see how that beauty transcends into the faulty/buggy-landscapes. Some really beautiful shots in there, as well as some funny ones.

  • This morning, I’ve been listening to “Instrumental House for the Soul with SANA” on the My Analog Journal YouTube channel. It motivated me to do a poster design. The first sketches included dancing people and a lot more stuff, but I felt like reducing the elements more and more until I was left with this idea.

  • It’s almost that time again

As a very wise man once said (Dan Savage, on his Savage Lovecast, years ago): Fuck first, then go eat dinner.

  • I’ll have to think about the graphic design some more, as you can tell this isn’t very inspired right now.
But I like the idea of clean lineart plus solid black shadows and harsh light. Since it’s a evil wizard game that feels appropriate.
I tried adding some hatching, and emulating copperplate engraving prints, but that didn’t satisfy me as much as this version.

  • Cardgame idea

I’m experimenting on another song but had this idea for a game that I quickly needed to put down.
I guess it’s a mix of Canasta, Rummy & Uno.

You’re a student in the final year at the tower of evil wizards incarnate. You have to craft spells together and against your fellow students and make sure you come out on top.
