A short history of me

  • 2003: Dipped a toe into computer science II at the university. Dropped out real quick. Switched to communications design – a much better fit.
  • 2003: Started freelancing as an illustrator. That never really stopped.
  • 2009: Graduated Dipl. Kommunikationsdesigner from HBK Saar. I illustrated Joanna Newsom’s song “Monkey & Bear” as propaganda posters.
  • 2011 – 2021: I explored leadership roles on the visual side of the games industry: concept artist, art director, team lead, creative advisor, talent scout, design director.
  • 2010s – 2020s: Taught design and concept art in various schools. I like sharing stuff and had the opportunity to do so there.
  • 2025 april – august: Selling strawberries, ’cause before starting university was the best time to try something completely different.
  • 2025: Let’s try the magic reset button in real life: started a dual study program in career guidance (Beratung für Bildung, Beschäftigung und Beruf – HdbA Schwerin, Agentur für Arbeit Berlin Süd
  • 2025 december: I quit the dual study program.
  • 2026: I guess it’s back to freelance

Currently

I’m always going through books, albums, and other things – here’s what stuck lately:

  • Hamburglar goes to Hell

A very short, fun, fantastic webcomic well worth checking out:

  • Silly project: brainstorming

This morning, while waiting for job feedback, I streamed ~2 hours of just throwing thoughts on a canvas and creating a mind map for a silly project. Since the video isn’t that interesting, here’s just the current status of the mindmap.
There’s no guarantee I’ll make this into an actual project; I simply enjoy the creative brain-drain.

  • Kasey Chambers – Lose yourself

The Eminem Cover I never expected but damn, it’s good.

It feels like today will be a “meh” kind of day. Dark, grey, moist, windy… miserable, dispiriting. I think I’ll bake some cookies to lift the mood and then probably draw a bit again later.

  • I’ve been streaming on Twitch since last week. Usually just an hour in the morning, doing my warmup. Sometimes also in the afternoon. I’ll make it a routine to also post the results from the warmup-session here from now on.

  • Ardor – Up the stairs I go

Several days after finishing this song, I realized my progress. I was happy with the result of this track, and I stayed happy. So, I decided to celebrate and treat myself to something extravagant. I decided to get a professional to work on the song.
Via recommendation, I found Rick Mazz of rickmazzstudios and contacted him. I was doubtful whether he would be interested in working on something so small and simple, but thankfully, Rick was open to it. He took the track, took my amateur notes on it, and did his magic. It’s incredible and eye-opening how much Rick improved the track’s sound by mixing and mastering it.

I’m very happy with how this turned out. I’m still celebrating.

I was listening to and thinking of Yann Tiersen’s “Amelie”-soundtrack when I worked on this.
