A short history of me

  • 2003: Dipped a toe into computer science II at the university. Dropped out real quick. Switched to communications design – a much better fit. 
  • 2003: Started freelancing as an illustrator. That never really stopped.
  • 2009: Graduated Dipl. Kommunikationsdesigner from HBK Saar. I illustrated Joanna Newsom’s song “Monkey & Bear” as propaganda posters.
  • 2011 – 2021: I explored leadership roles on the visual side of the games industry: concept artist, art director, team lead, creative advisor, talent scout, design director.
  • 2010s – 2020s: Taught design and concept art in various schools. I like sharing stuff and had the opportunity to do so there.
  • 2025 april – august: Selling strawberries, ’cause before starting university was the best time to try something completely different.
  • 2025: Let’s try the magic reset button in real life: started a dual study program in career guidance (Beratung für Bildung, Beschäftigung und Beruf – HdbA Schwerin, Agentur für Arbeit Berlin Süd
  • 2025 december: I quit the dual study program.
  • 2026: I guess it’s back to freelance

    I got several ideas to explore in this direction, combining my preference of cut/abstract shapes with cardboard/construction paper texture. Right now this is all Photoshop, but I might explore it using 3D as well

    A friend of mine customized some fables for her kids and collected them in a small book. These vignette illustrations were used at the start of each fable.

  • 20240426 – A journey of black and red

    I recently binge-read all eight available books of a series called “A Journey of Black and Red”. The story starts around 1803 in America. A young woman is turned into a Vampire and thrown into the deep end of political struggles, intrigue, power games and martial combat. The story was originaly published on Royal Road and you can still read it for free there.

    If you decide to give the story a go, don’t go in there expecting a classic novel. It isn’t. I would compare it to the experience of watching the first seasons of Supernatural, or Buffy, or Stargate SG-1. The story has a larger plot, and it is concluded, but it’s structure, pace, execution is different from regular novels.

    It’s a fantastic mix of heavy and light material, of sinister plots and lighthearted fun. It has great action, great banter, charming moments and characters. Out of the ~50 books I’ve read so far this year, this series is on the top of the pile.
