A short history of me

  • 2003: Dipped a toe into computer science II at the university. Dropped out real quick. Switched to communications design – a much better fit.
  • 2003: Started freelancing as an illustrator. That never really stopped.
  • 2009: Graduated Dipl. Kommunikationsdesigner from HBK Saar. I illustrated Joanna Newsom’s song “Monkey & Bear” as propaganda posters.
  • 2011 – 2021: I explored leadership roles on the visual side of the games industry: concept artist, art director, team lead, creative advisor, talent scout, design director.
  • 2010s – 2020s: Taught design and concept art in various schools. I like sharing stuff and had the opportunity to do so there.
  • 2025 april – august: Selling strawberries, ’cause before starting university was the best time to try something completely different.
  • 2025: Let’s try the magic reset button in real life: started a dual study program in career guidance (Beratung für Bildung, Beschäftigung und Beruf – HdbA Schwerin, Agentur für Arbeit Berlin Süd
  • 2025 december: I quit the dual study program.
  • 2026: I guess it’s back to freelance

Currently

I’m always going through books, albums, and other things – here’s what stuck lately:

  • I don’t know what exactly sparked it, but yesterday I did 8 idea skribbles based on this theme. Some work better graphicly, like this one, some would require me to paint them more elaborately. Don’t know how many I’ll pursue in the end, but I felt like executing this idea today.

  • I know the topic feels omnipresent, especially among artists, but for the most part, I actually manage to avoid the controversies and just stay neutrally up-to-date (Thanks to two-minute-papers on youtube).

Not so this morning. This morning I came across a opinion-piece/news-article lauding the development in AI; postulating how liberating AI will be, how current art-ai’s enable more creativity … blablabla bla. While I’m genuinely interested in the potential of automation, neural networks, “AI” etc., it’s disheartening how much of the current public facing development focuses on creative activities – like art, music, creative writing etc. .
I want AI to do my laundry, sort my socks, bring out the trash, dust off high shelves, clean windows, clean our floors/rooms (which have a lot of objects that require moving around for proper vacuming and a dog who is not helping the way he thinks he is)… . I want AI to do the menial work and earn me money, so I can afford living a more leisurely and creative life.

I took that spark of frustration from this morning and channeled it into an illustration.

  • Sometimes, all you need is cake.

  • I’m playing around some more in Blender. This time I went with a material thickness of 2mm, cranked the lens up to 700mm, and used a F-stop of 0.7

  • My first attept at using 3D with a sort of paper-cut style. Of course it had to be a bird. I used a “white-breasted Nuthatch” as the subject.
The distances between layers and the material thickness are exaggerated, but I liked the look so I went with it.
